Sayonara, cow

Pin It PIN IT!

Have you ever had a horrible reaction to a certain type of food? Where as soon as it hits your digestive track,  your stomach starts karate kicking and whipping out the num-chucks? Where the next 3-6 hours of your life are spent no more than 3 feet away from a bathroom? That was me two nights ago. And um, it wasn’t pretty.

Most people have similar reactions when they consume dairy, wheat or spicy food. Me? I have it towards my favorite food in the entire world, steak. Sweet, delicious, amazingly tender steak. And it’s not just steak either, it’s any meat that comes from a cow.

And you know what? This aversion to beef is NEW, as in, just this year new. And it’s not just a little tummy disturbance. It’s a full blown attack that leaves me completely incapacitated.

This means one thing, and one thing alone…no more beef. No more juicy steaks or gourmet hamburgers, no more delicious beef stroganoff or spicy beef kabobs.

I need a moment.

Okay, I’m a little bit better now. It looks like I’ll have to resort to other main sources of protein, like…

turkey

chicken

bacon

fish

and tofu.

I guess things could be worse, no? 🙂

Now, the verdict is still out on lamb, so E and I are going to do a taste test this weekend to see how I react to lamb chops. (That man, bless his heart).  Because life without steak, it’s do-able (it sucks, but it’s do-able). But life without this, too?

Well, that’s just a world I’m not quite ready for.

Do you just have the reaction to the meat or to the milk of a cow, as well? Also, I'm so sorry. :(
The good news, there are so many things to do those other foods! Mmmmm smoked pork butt.

The good thing about this is that now you know what the problem is and you'll soon find yourself in a routine where you won't even think about it (okay, not too much). I hope lamb isn't a problem either lady!

I do applaud you for standing up and doing what is best for your body. So many people fail to listen to the not-so-subtle hints our bodies give us about the things we eat!

The same thing happened to me, but with shellfish, and I loooooved crab. Hang in there, your taste adjusts to your what your body tells you, and soon you won't miss it. In the meantime, at least there is bacon.

Man, I don't know if life without steak is doable!  I'm not sure I could make it.  You're wonderfully optimistic about it but then...if my tummy was trying to redo the scene from Alien where the little bitty bursts out I probably could give up steak too.

You poor thing.  Do you think it's the hormones in traditional beef or something?  Have you tried grass-fed?  I know it's wicked expensive, but as an occasional treat, if it doesn't upset your stomach too much.  If you are looking for good chicken recipes, try my chicken adobo!

I also can't eat cow because I get sick from it - but it's more because I haven't eaten it in so long that my body hates me if/when I end up having a little bit of it. Pork/bacon, as well. Oddly enough, the one thing I miss are real hot dogs.. I've never been a big fan of steak!

That being said, turkey is a GREAT substitute for a lot of this, especially turkey burgers. You can definitely make one that could rival a big juicy burger!!

Oh my friend, I feel your pain. You know of my red meat aversion; at first it was difficult to not eat red meat (the smell of a cheeseburger was oh so tempting), but after 11 years I can tell you that I don't miss it (and haven't missed it) for a verrrrry long time. Don't worry though: eating a bite of your hubby's steak won't put you into turmoil. I just have to be verrrry careful at how much I eat and limit myself to a 3 bite maximum!
