Honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a Giveaway!

Pin It PIN IT!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to honor this incredibly important month, I am hosting a pink giveaway! Before we get to the details and prizes, I want to shed some light on this crippling disease. According to the American Cancer Society’s official website, there are an estimated 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer that are expected to be diagnosed in 2010. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, and 1 in 35 will die from it. Terrifying odds, aren’t they? Although breast cancer has been diagnosed in men, this disease is most commonly found in women, and is diagnosed when a malignant tumor is found in the cells of the breast. Most cases are classified as invasion carcinoma, which is an invasive type of cancer that has already grown beyond the layers of the cell where it started. Much like the other types of cancer, the severity of one’s condition is classified in stages, going from 0-IV. [Please visit the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month’s website for a full description of the stages].

So what can you do to help fight this horrible disease? For one, you can fight your odds of getting it by leading a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition and regular exercise. It’s also important to give yourself breast exams or get a mammogram, which can detect cancer before it spreads or becomes malignant. If you are already doing these [good job!] and want to help more, find your local Susan J. Komen chapter and sign up to run or walk in the frequent Race for the Cures that take place all over the country or donate money to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Another easy way to help fight against breast cancer is to shop! Yes, that’s right, you can shop to help find a cure! Many retailers are donating a percentage of their profits to breast cancer research foundations nationwide. Stores like Bloomingdales, Avon and Estée Lauder even donate up to 100% of certain products proceeds to the fight as well!

So in order to celebrate the millions of women who have beaten this disease and help fight for those who can’t fight themselves, I’m giving away $65 dollars worth of goods from Bloomingdale’s Little Pink Boutique, whose donations go to Breast Cancer Research Foundation! Contest rules are below!

One lucky winner will receive…

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer - adenocarcinoma - one month after my 30th birthday. I had a clear pap just four months prior to the pap that showed cancerous cells. I was extraordinarily lucky that I had an OB/GYN that took my symptoms seriously and performed a pap four months after my annual. I was only stage 1A1 when diagnosed - I don't like to think about what stage it would have been had I had to wait another eight months for my annual. You can definitely catch cancer early if you know your body.

I lost my grandma to breast cancer before I was ever able to meet her. The real tragedy of this is that my dad and his two younger sisters lost their mother who had sacrificed her own well-being to take care of them when their dad was hit by a drunk driver when my father was 10. I know that today, many mothers are in similar situations, whether because of death or divorce, and I hate to think of what these kids and mothers go through. I can't stop cancer, but I can help spread awareness and take care of myself as much as possible.

I lost my grandfather to cancer about 10 years ago. Unfortunately, by the time they found it, it was too late to do much about it. I've never participated in a walk, but it is one area I try to support in any way I can, like participating in fundraisers, and buying products that send a portion of profits to finding a cure.

Sadly cancer has become so common and almost expected. I know several people who have had breast cancer scares or survived it including two aunts and one of my bridesmaids. My soon to be father in law has leukemia and both my grandpa and stepfather had prostate cancer scares. We have a strong belief in the power of a healthy lifestyle and preventative type care to help avoid cancer if at all possible. Kudos to you for helping to raise awareness and for being so proactive about a wellness lifestyle also!

What an amazing giveaway! Cancer is so unfortunately prevalent in so many lives. My grandmother and great-grandmother are breast cancer survivors. My uncle passed away about five years ago from lung cancer. Thanks for sponsoring this and helping a great cause. Together, we can and will find a cure.

LOVE this giveaway! Breast cancer specifically has greatly impacted my life - It took my grandmother's life (who was and is my hero) at the age of 64. I've participated in multiple Race for the Cures with family members in her memory.

My aunt died from cancer when I was about ten and she was not only my favorite aunt but the only one I really knew. I miss her so much and my mom does too. She still cries sometimes when she thinks about her.
