Pin It PIN IT!

Welcome to the realistic nutritionist! I’m so happy to finally get this off the ground, for many reasons, most of which I’ll explain below. Now, before I get into the mean and potatoes of this, I wanted to present you with a question.

Without giving it much thought, which would you rather eat? Image A or Image B? Which did you chose? Now Image A is obviously the better choice. It’s healthy, low fat, low calorie, no added sugars and is guarenteed to make you feel good. Image B, on the other hand, is full of saturated fat, high in empty calories, loaded with grease and sodium, and is sure to make you feel bloated. It’s an easy question, with an easy answer, right?

The reality of the matter will scare you. http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html

Just take a moment to look at these 2 maps, provided by the CDC (for a complete slideshow of all the years in between, visit the website above). If the answer between eating an apple and fries is so simple and painstakily obvious, why has the obesity rate continued to climb, to an earth shatteringly high statistic? It’s because it’s not as simple as just chosing an apple over fries. the choice goes deeper than that. These two images represent not only the battle we face everyday when we are staring into our fridges or perusing the deli counter during the lunch rush, but they also reflective of our knowledge, desires, self esteem, self worth, our time and our subconcious desires to fit in and feel accepted. When you chose fries over an apple, it’s not just a fleeting thought, it tugs at all the real emotions that make us human. Pretty deep little images, aye?

That little excerise proves how big of a part nutritional choices are to our life. Nutrition is one of the most important aspects of our health; however, as the obesity rate continues to climb, I’m stumped and left to wonder why people aren’t realizing this for themselves. Nutrition and fitness go hand in hand, and without one, the other is not nearly as effective. I’ve ready countless articles dictating that “you can lose all the weight you want without changing your diet or excercising, just take this pill!” or “you don’t need to diet, just exercise” or my favorite “exercise won’t help you lose weight!” As easy as our lives would be if we could eat all we wanted, sit on our butts and still lose weight, it’s just not realistic or attainable. And with such dueling headlines plaguing American TV commercials, magazine ads, talk shows, etc. it’s no wonder most Americans are clueless when it comes to weight loss and living a healthy lifestyle. And trust me, I know what it’s like, I’m one of the millions of American’s who struggle with their weight, find themselves helpless and defeated and wish there was a better way to look at this. No one is perfect, and every one body is different, which is why so many people fail at standardized diets that just leave them feeling like a statistic.  I’ve tried diet after diet, and I’ve had some success, but it’s never lasted. I’ve done intense exercise regimes, which have never stood the test of time. Why? Well after years and years of pouring my heart and soul into the study of nutrition, I think I’ve found the answer. Stay tuned for my next post to find it out!

I’m so excited about this blog and I can’t wait to see where it goes and how it grows with me, both personally and professionally. Stay tuned for updates and thanks for visiting the realistic nutritionist!
